Modern internal design retaining original exterior
The Brief
We were asked to create a new flow for the house using the existing hallway, study and TV room, by forming an area for everyday family life. This extension had to be in keeping with the original home, while providing a modern internal approach.
As with all homes the development and growth of a family is assisted by their surroundings. The original house layout was broken into separate areas, with the kitchen too small for family living, and the existing extension a separate, detached-feeling room.
What we did
The design was conceived to invite the family into the new zone upon entering the hallway of the house. A light, bright and airy zone without walls providing three zones: the garden room, kitchen and dining room, maintaining access to the utility room and TV room.
Our design enabled those in the dining room to observe those at play in the TV room through new glazed doors, as well as those relaxing in the garden room or in the kitchen area.
What challenges did we encounter?
Whilst the design had several level issues that were easily accommodated, there was also first floor drainage coming down in the centre of the room. We redirected this and designed it to blend in with a beam construction that did not stand out, but was accentuated with lighting in the new areas.
The amount of light reaching the depths of the new area was a concern, but we remedied this with the introduction of roof lights and flank oriel windows.
